The ECG Strip
Basics
To interpret the ECG you must be familiar with some basic information about the ECG strips. Below you see an example of a classic green background ecg strip. Nowadays there are different type of ecg papers and recording available. The principles however are the same.
The basic ECG strip

Each ECG strip has 1500 small squares in one minute.
- 1 minute = 60 seconds
- 1 minute = 1500 small squares
- 1500 small squares = 60 seconds
The basic ECG strip numbers

To calculate how long each small square is you must divide 60 seconds by 1500.
- 1 small square = 60 / 1500 = 0.04 seconds
The big square
One big square in the ECG is equal to 5 small squares. To calculate how long is one big square on the ECG is easy. You just need to multiple one small square x 5 or 0.04 x 5. One big square is 0.20 seconds.
