Asystole

Assystole is the abscense of electrical activity in the heart. During asystole the ECG will display an isoelectric activity on the baseline. That is why you will see on line going through the middle of the ECG paper.

Asystole must always be confirmed in at least 2 leads in the ECG. Sometimes a fine ventricular fibrillation may have a similar appearance as asystole. Patients in asystole are pulseless and have no measurable blood pressure.

Asystole - What to look for

  • isoelectric activity or flat line
  • check in at least two leads
  • no pulse is present
  • leads are not disconnected
